At a time when dialogue has often given way to polarization and labeling, the Imam’s words offer an important reminder: even truth, if presented to people through coercion and deception, has departed from the path of Islam.
He provides a clear criterion: the right approach is reasoning and raising awareness, not coercion and deception. This perspective also offers a model for how we should engage with people who hold different views in today’s world.
“A complete human being is one who, when he realizes that what he is saying is true, presents it with reasoning and explains his ideas to others through argument and evidence. The reason the Holy Qur’an says, ‘There is no compulsion in religion’ is that beliefs cannot be imposed. It is impossible for someone simply to impose beliefs on others. This would have to be done through some kind of deception or conspiracy—making something bad appear good to others. But if a person is truly human and properly educated, he should explain what he believes to people through reasoning and evidence. There should be no coercion. One should make people aware that this is the path, rather than forcing them to follow it.”
