Iran says US talks to focus on implementation of deal’s first clause

Iran says the planned negotiations with the United States will focus on the implementation of the first clause of the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei made the remarks on Sunday on the sidelines of the talks which are expected to take place between Iranian and American delegations in Switzerland's Burgenstock later in the day.

“The start of negotiations for a final agreement is conditional on five specific clauses, including clause one of the MoU, which concerns the cessation of hostilities in all fronts, including Lebanon,” he said.

“We know that this clause has not been implemented and that the US has not been able to or has not wanted to. The Zionist regime keeps violating its commitment. This is the main topic of discussions in today's talks.”

The spokesman also emphasized that the planned meeting demonstrates Iran's seriousness in following up on the other party’s commitments.

“We had no intention of signing a document while expecting that it would be automatically implemented by the other side,” he added. “We never forget previous experiences.”

Iran closes Strait of Hormuz after US-Israeli violations of MoU

On Wednesday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and his American counterpart Donald Trump remotely signed the MoU, which brings about a permanent end to the illegal US-Israeli war of aggression against the Islamic Republic.

The 14-point deal includes a commitment from both countries to hold further talks on a final agreement in the next 60 days.

It calls for a permanent end to hostilities across all fronts, including Lebanon, the phased lifting of US sanctions, the removal of the naval blockade on Iran within 30 days, and the restoration of commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

On Saturday, Iran’s central military command officially declared the Strait of Hormuz closed to all maritime traffic, citing US and Israeli violations of the Tehran-Washington MoU.
