The Iranian news outlet Defa Press reported on Sunday that the tanker struck a naval mine after deviating from the route specified by Iran for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
The report described the vessel as a "violating tanker," noting that Iranian authorities had previously warned that ships deviating from the designated corridor would bear responsibility for any consequences.
The report did not identify the vessel, provide details on its ownership or destination, or indicate whether there were casualties or environmental damage.
Separately, Iranian state television reported that the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy has intercepted six vessels over the past 24 hours after they attempted to transit the Strait of Hormuz “without authorization and outside the designated shipping route” administered by Iran.
According to the broadcaster, IRGC naval forces fired warning shots before intercepting the vessels, preventing them from continuing their voyages until they altered course.
The latest incident follows a similar announcement by the IRGC on Saturday, when it said four vessels had been stopped after attempting unauthorized crossings through the strategic waterway.
The developments come amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States over security and navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's busiest maritime chokepoints for global energy shipments.
Iran and the US signed a Pakistani-brokered Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) last month to end the American-Israeli aggression against the Islamic Republic, which had begun on February 28.
Under the understanding, Iran agreed to allow fee-free maritime transit through the strait for a period of 60 days.
In compliance with the MoU, the Islamic Republic devised a special maritime route for vessels to cross the chokepoint, while warning vessels against using illegal routes.
The US has, however, been trying to escort transit through the strait along an illegal passageway, prompting the Islamic Republic to shut the corridor until Washington ended its interference in regional maritime movement.
